MICROSOFT SURFACE - AMAZING INNOVATION
May 30th 2007 22:24
As you probably understand by the title, this is a product that looks incredibly awesome. By Microsoft. I know, rare but true. The again, I do use Vista so...
This is called Surface, and is a computer formed as a table. It uses multiple touch, which makes it possible to understand several different touches at once and therefore can be collaborative as well as fun.
Basically, users can perform tasks such as browsing through pictures and music files with their fingers alone. There's also a nice use for Surface in restaurants - a touch on the screen could allow you to order or show you info about a specific type of wine you drink, etc.
What I personally find intriguing is the fact that Surface can read bar codes from different items and make advanced use of devices possible. Like transfer digital content, from your Zune to Surface and to another Zune. Or from your digital camera to the Surface and to your cellphone.
The 30inch screen is perfectly enough as well.
And all this are just part of the incredible features it has. You can watch the video beneath for demonstration or download this longer but better clip.
The price is ok too, at least for something that starts off. Around $5,000-$10,000. Should be available at the end of this year, so no empty promises here.

Sony and Panasonic are actually creating the technology to make this happen, spending probably billions of dollars creating new technology.
Microsoft instead of spending the money on the technology to make this happen or even partnership with a company like Sony or Panasonic they instead spend money to on marketing to take credit for the idea which is already in development at Sony and Panasonic.
Even this quote from the conference website: “Microsoft plans thin-panel versions, vertical displays, etc.”
It looks like they saw the same YouTube videos of the technology Sony and Panasonic are actually already creating to make this happen.

Who's out with it? Microsoft. Well done. Sony surely has the money to do the same thing, but obviously didn't.
In the YouTube clip they say that the multi touch function has existed since the 80s, so they're not taking all of the credit...
But yes, Microsoft generally is too big for its own good.
