My intention is never to demean, but given the similar functions of most smart phones, I didn't think it wise to spend more on a cell phone that simply does almost practically the same things its less expensive brethrens do.

What cell phone unit, for example, cannot browse the web, has no camera, don't play recorded music and video, won't carry office files (such as word, excel, powerpoint, etc., don't send text messages and oh, cannot be used for voice calls these days?

Ok, so not all cell phones can do all that. But there are always cheaper alternatives.

So, until just a few days ago, cell phones with names like Iphone and Blackberry and similarly priced mobile phones are a big no- no to me,

What changed my mind? Well, a mobile forex trading platform offered by some brokerage house did it for me.

I'm just in the process of getting myself acquainted with Forex trading, but if there's anything I immediately noticed about this thing, it is the need for some agility - the ability to get in and out of one’s position depending on the movement of the market.

Obviously, that ability becomes more important when the market moves against you.

Now, other people can stay glued to their computers for the most part of their daily lives. I cannot. I need to move a lot. When I travel, I will still be lugging around my laptop computer along with the mobile phones that I use as modem to connect my laptop to the internet.

But in between stops when I do not have enough time to boot the notebook and use a more comfortable internet browsing equipment, the IPhone or a Blackberry will serve the purpose.

No, I am not abandoning my old and dependable cheaper cell phones units. It is just that I tried installing the trading platform software in them but they will not work. The trading platform software supports only IPhones and Blackberries.

So now, I guess, I already have an excuse to get either an Iphone or a Blackberry. Now, which one is it going to be?

Will somebody toss the coin please!

HOW ABOUT A DUAL SIM PHONE?

December 2nd 2009 00:00
Maybe inefficiency started it all. You know, like you have this mobile phone company which only has a good signal in this neck of the woods and another provider that monopolizes the signal in an area the size of a pea where you happen to be and the only choice you have, since you are going to be there for quite a while, is either stay incommunicado or subscribe to the company that can give you a line to the outside world.

Anyway, the way people communicate these days? That would be like giving you no choice at all!

So, your next choices will be: either to buy another phone (which means you will be carrying two mobile phones), or buy one cell phone that supports two sims (lines) from two different companies. That is, if you don’t like the idea of changing sims every time you go to an area served by another cell phone signal provider – other than the one you subscribed to.

That would mean you have to buy your mobile phone unit at a higher (full) price, because you are practically waving your right to a subsidized phone if you get an open line.

Unless, you go for a Chinese imitation mobile phone that do not really perform half as well as the original units. Yep, the imitation phones remain substandard despite the fact that practically almost everything is now made in China (maybe even the cloth that was used to make your country’s flag).

Here's an imitation phone. But please, don't forget, those Chinese guys do the original units too. Okay? Sub-contracted to them by the patent owners

Oh, but we are not really going to talk about quality here just the wisdom of having a phone that supports dual sims.

See, I was just in this trip with a co-worker who uses that kind of phone (Chinese imitation phone with a dual sim). At the beginning, we both thought it was cool to have a cell phone like that. He was only carrying one phone (unlike me who was carrying two), it wasn’t expensive (while I have to pay the price of two mobile phones) and he is always within a signal area of at least one cell phone signal provider (just like me).

And he enjoyed several other advantages over me like: he only had to maintain one cell phone, carry one battery charger, charge only one phone, he didn’t have to synchronize the contacts in his phones, etc., etc.
It really looked and sounded smart to be carrying just one cell phone with everything you need in it. It also has features like: camera (1.2 megapixels), media player, FM radio, voice recorder… you name it!

But then, one day, its microphone refused to function. Just like that. You know, you call the phone and, when it was answered, whoever is using it will hear you but whatever he/she says you will not hear. The microphone was busted. What did I say?

We are not talking about the quality of the phone, right? So, you get my point. You only have one phone, it has everything in it, then it refused to work, it got stolen or you simply lost it. What have you got left?

Nada. Zilch.

Everything gone!

It was an imitation phone, I hope you have a backup copy of your contacts in there somewhere. Maybe in your laptop or desktop computer.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung has unveiled the world's first solar-powered mobile phone called 'Blue Earth'. The phone is designed in the shape of a shiny pebble, and uses a small solar panel to provide solar power, apart from the normal plug-in power.

Samsung Blue Earth

Taking the green bit further, the phone is claimed to be made from recycled plastic water bottles.
A full solar charge of around 10 to 14 hours will provide enough power for around four hours of talk time. The handset can still be charged normally using a conventional plug, with the solar panels used to top up the battery during use.

There are interesting green features as well. The “eco walk” function, can count the number of steps you have taken and the amount of carbon dioxide you have saved by not travelling by car.

The device would be launched initially in Europe in the second half of 2009 but is likely to be in the price range of a mid to high-end handset, according to Samsung representative.

At the MWB, LG Electronics had also put a prototype solar-powered phone on display although the handset is not ready for market.

Sony Ericsson W960 and K850i

W960
Music Phone!

Sony Ericsson released news about its new W960 Walkman Phone today, which will boast an impressive 8 GB of memory into its 119 gram body. That translates to around 8000 songs on your cell phone, which is around 20,000 minutes of music—more, of course, than you can listen to on one battery charge certainly. Besides being designed for music, the W960 will ship with a 2.6” display that is touch-sensitive and intended to make web browsing a breeze. And since WiFi is included, it will be easy to connect. And then there's the 3.2 megapixel camera, proving that one accessory isn't quite enough for a cell phone anymore, but at least Sony Ericsson is keeping up with trends. Unfortunately the only way the W960 is currently planned to let you use headphones is through a Bluetooth headset. At least one is coming free with the phone, so I guess I should find something new to complain about. Maybe the size of my apartment

Are you the sort of gamer who longs for the good ol' days when you could be an Italian plumber and squash wee beasties that look something like a cross between cupcakes and mushrooms? And do you ignore phone calls when you're doing something like, say, wasting time playing a computer game? Well, then you might like Ericcson's PSP phone, which is causing quite a ruckus within the gaming sphere. Now if only I had people to call me who I could ignore while I smash goombas... Source

Motorola RAZR 2 introduced

Motorola RAZR 2

I have never owned a Motorola, mostly because my dad had one a very long time ago and brainwashed me to hate them, since he obviously wasn't pleased. I understand Motorola's phones have evolved though, so I wouldn't mind one sometime in the future.
