WHY I AM NOT A BLACKBERRY GUY

November 26th 2009 00:22
Here’s a confession. Just like the next guy, I am tempted by the alluring looks and seductive features of fine pieces of “art” called… well… high end mobile phones, a.k.a. smart phones. I mean, take one look at them and immediately, you are hit with this shameless desire of exploring the unbounded promises of technological wonders!

Unfortunately, many of those promises are just that – promises. Empty. Non-existent, and sometimes, if ever they exist, they only exist in our minds, us, the consumers. Those are expectations that we, probably, provided ourselves. Thanks, but no thanks, to our own fertile imaginations.

Oh, naturally, it’s not our fault entirely. The guys who produced those phones would like to sell them and make their hefty profits, so they hired people who are just as creative and imaginative (if not more so) as we are to package their products in such a way that the products would appeal, strongly, to their target clientele which included us.

Nope, the creative people would not lie. They will not make false claims. But they will make those impressions that their products can fulfill our subliminal needs, whatever those needs are.

And so, you drool and promptly make the payments…

You go home and, since you are comfortable with new technology, you set aside the manual and tried to make your new toy do the job that you want it to do by just tinkering with it. The problem is, it won’t. you try again, and it still wouldn’t do your bidding!

No, the unit is not defective. Another no, the manual can’t help you a bit even if you chew and tasted every single word written in it. Why? Because it cannot do what you want it to do, period!

Sure, the thing that you bought is a pack of techno wonders. It can actually do many things - except that one thing that you really want it to do. Bummer, hu?

And that my dear friends, is why I am not a Blackberry guy. (Never mind that U.S. President Barrack Obama cannot live without it.)

When I was thinking really hard whether to get one of that cell phone or not, I chose to ignore the trimmings and the hypes. I love the looks of the Blackberry model that I set my eyes on. I relish the status symbol that it would create. It is not everybody’s phone. It is several notches higher! And best of all, it has many things in it that our ordinary mobile phones do not have.

Well, so I thought.

But then, I looked closer. I found out the Blackberry that I want is not even 3G. It boasts of its email and browsing capabilities, etc. but it is only on EDGE and GPRS (UMTS or HSDPA are a lot faster )and, I was told, it won’t serve as a lowly modem. I mean, do you really believe a gadget that fits in a man’s back pocket can replace a laptop in browsing the web?

Uh, let me check the one with another color please! Pic source: Wikipedia

Then, there’s that thing about the camera. At that price, it only goes with 2 megapixels. To be fair, I’ll admit that Blackberry has units that are HSDPA capable, with higher resolution cameras, etc. But those are even pricier than the unit that I already consider expensive.

Besides, I’ll have to use both hands to operate one of them. That is something that I find really hard to do while driving. Maybe I am behind the learning curve here, but somehow I feel that I need to grow two more hands to be able to do that properly. And I have not even learned how to grow additional hands!

Ok, I’ll grant that the ability to read one’s emails, while on the go, is really important. But if you are a man who has to deal with some details, and have to respond to the emails you are reading in a lengthy manner, would you not rather do it with a bigger machine? And if you are to respond to the emails with but a few words, why not just use SMS? Further, if you are going on a business trip will you really leave your laptop behind?

What I’m saying here is this, if you want a cell phone that will enable you to read emails on the go, you can find a lot of less pricey units. The ones that function both as a modem and a browser would be better because that will enable you to connect your laptop to the internet. Let’s you work easier and faster and, maybe, even gentler to your eyes. At least, you have a choice on which one you want to use to browse the web, the phone or the laptop.

Sure, there are people who buy T-shirts that are 10 times more expensive than the ordinary shirts, maybe even more. And what do T-shirts do, eh? But then, there are wealthier people who buy T-shirts that costs 50 percent less than the ordinary shirts…

Why short change yourself?

JUST MOVED IN

November 24th 2009 00:57
I’ll try to make this “short and sweet”, like they always say.

I’ve just been given permission to take over this blog which has been dormant for quite a while. I’m sure readers of the previous “keepers” of this page will find a big difference in what they used to find here and what they will see after I’ve taken over.

Albert, my predecessor, used to introduce new tech toys for his posts. I decided to have a look at some of them for mine. I hope the readers find the new entries just as useful, albeit in a different way.

Happy reading!

SHOULD YOU BUY THAT NEXT PHONE?

November 23rd 2009 02:00
Tempting, isn’t it? Sleek, faster, smarter, and it has a host of new features that promise whole new experiences! The question is, do you really want that phone? Hold on a min…!

Well, okay, okay, I know you’ve already bought that phone even before I could finish asking the question. No problem. I wasn’t really going to stop you from buying it - especially if you can afford it. C’mon, consumers fuel the economy…

Besides, I am aware of the fact that if cell phones are men or women, the past several years would have seen the most number of Casanovas (male and female) in this world.

Cellular phones
Well, hello there ladies!

But then, there are still those other cell phones, right? And if you move around a lot, you’d probably noticed that the signal of your service provider either weakens or totally disappears in some areas. You need to be accessible to your clients all the time, so… you need to buy another mobile phone?

Not so quick this time, please!

See, there’s that one little consideration that we sometimes forget when we buy something new – and sometimes, that forgotten little thing costs us quite a sum...

How’s that?

Let’s start with the features of that old cell phone you are about to retire with the purchase of the new one. Does that old phone have a feature called “presenter” or something similar to it?

If that feature (it’s actually a software) sounds alien to you. Here’s a bit of explanation. Presenter enables you to operate your computer remotely (up to a distance of about 10 meters). It’s handy when you are making a Powerpoint presentation in front of an audience using a laptop and a projector and you have no one to help you with it.

Actually, it’s better than having someone pushing those buttons for you to bring up the next slides. That’s because you are the one who knows when to push the buttons and to which direction you want it to go (retrieve the previous slide or proceed to the next slide).

My N6233 (an older phone) had that feature. I was using it even to control my laptop’s media player. My K800i had the same but I was more comfortable using the N6233.

When I bought the E51, I was disappointed to find out that it doesn’t have the same “presenter” that I have in my N6233. Now, hold on a minute! I checked, ok? The literature I read about E51 said it has a presenter. But it didn’t say it was a different version and I have to buy it! It came free with my two (2) previous phones.

But you got the point right? If would be great if you only use your mobile phone for voice calls and text messages. But then, again, what’s the use of moving up to the more sophisticated and more expensive units if those are the only features you use?

I’m hardly the guy who explore every single feature of a high tech gadget (phone or whatever) but I identify its more productive uses (for me) and I love having them in my phones, all the time.

Imagine what happens when, after paying a substantial amount money (and after wading thru all those much hyped up but useless trimmings), you discovered that all the features that you really like in your new high-tech toy, are actually in your old cell phone and are not in the new one!

Oh, I’m sure you’ll have your own very creative excuses and you wouldn't mind spending a bit more to get some of your old phone's functionality into your new phone. If you are oozing with money, that is.

The story should be a little different, if you are on the practical side of things.

In case it is named differently in your country, E51 is a 3G Nokia intelligent phone. Well, it is supposed to be intelligent.

November 8th 2009 00:00

Hold on fellas! Before you bat those eyelashes or raise those eyebrows, give me some room here, ok? And please, let’s try to lower our expectations… I may be exaggerating a bit, but then again, maybe I am not

The U800 Nightmare!

November 4th 2009 01:38
First off, I would like to emphasize that I do not intend to malign techno products, gadgets or brands in my babbling, now or ever.

I like tinkering with these stuffs, though. So, I buy them with certain kind of expectations. I, on the other hand, like many marginal consumers, do not have great resources. Thus, when I check out the gadgets that I so darn believe I cannot live without I am ready to part ways with what, to my mind, is a great deal of money
