Samsung Launches First Solar-Powered Phone

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung has unveiled the world's first solar-powered mobile phone called 'Blue Earth'. The phone is designed in the shape of a shiny pebble, and uses a small solar panel to provide solar power, apart from the normal plug-in power.
Taking the green bit further, the phone is claimed to be made from recycled plastic water bottles.
A full solar charge of around 10 to 14 hours will provide enough power for around four hours of talk time. The handset can still be charged normally using a conventional plug, with the solar panels used to top up the battery during use.
There are interesting green features as well. The “eco walk” function, can count the number of steps you have taken and the amount of carbon dioxide you have saved by not travelling by car.
The device would be launched initially in Europe in the second half of 2009 but is likely to be in the price range of a mid to high-end handset, according to Samsung representative.
At the MWB, LG Electronics had also put a prototype solar-powered phone on display although the handset is not ready for market.
