Gizmo Peek - December 2008

According to a report, Interphone is about to announce the results of their largest-ever study to investigate whether cellphones cause cancer next month.

Interphone researchers have analyzed the results gathered from studies on 6,400 tumors sampled from patients in 13 countries. If the final results mirror the preliminary ones, we'd need to seriously rethink about our mobile usage. Israeli researchers participating in Interphone found that people who use cellphones regularly are 50% more likely than non-users to develop brain tumors. They also reported a 40 percent increase in tumor risk in people who use cellphones for more than a decade; they found no risk for people who have used cellphones for less than 10 years.

No one yet knows specifically how cellphones could cause cancer. The radiation they emit has too little energy to cause genetic damage, but some scientists believe that it may have indirect effects that cause cells to proliferate uncontrollably.

Although a handful of studies have been published on cellphones over the past few years, most have been statistically useless, as they surveyed too few people. Interphone study involves the largest yet sample and looks at the influence of both short- and long-term use. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Retrevo, a Sunnyvale-based startup has come out with it's forecast of Top Winners and Losers in consumer electronics products for 2009.

Retrevo
collects much of it's data from 3 million people who use the site's search technology to shop, buy or request customer support; and they also crawl the Web for reviews, comments and product manuals and analyzes them. Plus, all of the major retailers feed Retrevo with data on their product prices.

Retrevo then comes up with a forecast based on a combination of all this data.

For 2009, they have just released the list of Winners, which includes: Home theater systems, laptops(esp netbooks), digital cameras, high-definition televisions and Blu-ray DVD players

Their forecast on next years' Losers include: Cell phones, MP3 players, desktop printers and GPS systems.

Happy Year-end Shopping!

Being on Google all the time, I tend to use the trends feature on Google quite often. It gives you an Insight into almost anything on the planet. After Google made Android opensource, I thought of checking the search popularity of Mobile Operating Systems.

I compared Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile on Google Trends to find the rise or fall in popularity of these OS in 2008.

Mobile OS Comparison chart

As seen in the screenshot above, Windows Mobile seems to be winning in search volumes at the end of 2008. Symbian remains at No.2 with no growth seen in search volumes. Android is at No.3 but seems almost ready to overtake Symbian - probably going open source has helped it through news or blogs in building up the search volumes.

HDi technology is going to revolutionize the way we watch videos online! HDi technology uses a new compression technology, which will benefit from processing power spread across the globe on many servers. So, effectively, it claims to remove the current buffering time from heavy (or sometimes even small) video downloads.

FilmOn
, the new video download service, is launching this new technology for it's customers this week, claims it to be like a turbo-charge for the streaming website, and "will transform the broadcasting industry". To start with, it offers a collection of 7,000 films, with around 70% of them available for free
