Gizmo Peek - May 2007

Microsoft Surface

As you probably understand by the title, this is a product that looks incredibly awesome. By Microsoft. I know, rare but true. The again, I do use Vista so...

This is called Surface, and is a computer formed as a table. It uses multiple touch, which makes it possible to understand several different touches at once and therefore can be collaborative as well as fun.

Basically, users can perform tasks such as browsing through pictures and music files with their fingers alone. There's also a nice use for Surface in restaurants - a touch on the screen could allow you to order or show you info about a specific type of wine you drink, etc.

What I personally find intriguing is the fact that Surface can read bar codes from different items and make advanced use of devices possible. Like transfer digital content, from your Zune to Surface and to another Zune. Or from your digital camera to the Surface and to your cellphone.

The 30inch screen is perfectly enough as well.

And all this are just part of the incredible features it has. You can watch the video beneath for demonstration or download this longer but better clip.

The price is ok too, at least for something that starts off. Around $5,000-$10,000. Should be available at the end of this year, so no empty promises here.

Toshiba V801

What's up with more and more disk-space as the portable media center players are getting smaller?

How about 80GB or 40GB? 4-inch, 24-bit color, 480 x 272 pixel display? That's what Toshiba's players have, amongst other features.

They also got a sensor to adjust the brightness depending on the local light conditions. Of course, since it's an advanced PMC, you can watch TV and record too, if you feel like it.

But with cool stuff there's a not so cool price. Almost $500 for 80GB and $400 for 40GB. Not an incredible difference, so I would shoot for the bigger one. If I could shoot in the first place that is.

It will be available June 1 in Japan.

Source.

Bob the Pro Pickpocket

May 28th 2007 09:17
I'm always amazed by people who can do tricks that seem impossible. I can watch a trick 100 times and still not figure out how the heck it's done.

But I guess that's the point.

Bob Arno, a professional thief (sounds like a fun job), is probably the quickest fingers in the world. He literally can leave you nude without you realizing it. If he ever comes near me I think I'd run like a headless chicken. I'm shy about my pants.

I want to say some of it is fake, but then again, who am I to know?

Robots here and robots everywhere. Soon it'll be like Planet of the Apes, but instead of apes there will be robots.

This new one is called Rogun, and is supposed to guard kids. How you guard kids? By giving them endless hours of video to watch of course! But that's not all, the parents can connect to the internet and look at the kids through the robot's camera eyes at any time. Unless the robot is confused and keep thinking the cat is the young one (now that I think of it, maybe it can guard pets as well

LED Table glows when touched

May 15th 2007 11:55
This is a pretty cool table. It lights the place that is touched. However, it's not very usable.

First of all, there's water all over it. Since the LED's light is transfered onto the table through water, you can't avoid getting wet every time you touch it. Secondly, I don't think it will be as cool without transparent things, since they won't glow more than a bit around their bottom
